HBO’s The Newsroom Premieres Sunday But I Got to Watch it Tonight!

HBO (and Executive Producer Aaron Sorkin)’s new series, The Newsroom, is about a nightly cable news team, centering around anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer), staff members (John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Dev Patel & Olivia Munn) and their boss Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston). It premieres Sunday, June 24th at 10pm but since I’m an Entertainment Weekly subscriber (p.s. thank you Entertainment Weekly, I love you!), I got invited to an advanced screening tonight.

I love shows about shows. Being that I’ve always wanted to work in television, I love seeing every little bit of the behind-the-scenes action! And The Newsroom did not disappoint!

So a quick recap (because I know you’ll be watching and it premieres in only 5 days): we open the show with Will McAvoy basically having a “moment” and lashing out a bit on a college audience, which leads to a 2 week vacation. When he returns to the studio, his staff has left him to join the new 10 o’clock news anchor’s team – including his executive producer. Will’s boss, Charlie Skinner, has already hired a new EP and it’s someone from Will’s past – MacKenzie McHale. As Will and MacKenzie banter in his office, news is breaking about an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The show is set April, 2010.

It’s really fun and interesting to see a show like this. Here we have a news show but it’s from two years ago, so we, the audience, know what’s going to happen, news-wise, how big of a deal it is and what’s going to happen next. We don’t know however how these characters are going to deal with this news and how they interact together. I love it!

I love all of the characters, even Don, who is a jerk but got put in his place so it was ok. The Newsroom is dramatic, funny and extremely entertaining. I’ve always liked Jeff Daniels and I can see Will McAvoy becoming one of my favorite TV characters. I thought I’d like this show but I love it! I can’t wait to see what happens next and what this season brings!
